Discount Computer in Disguise

Recased computer

On occasion we have a customer complain that their computer doesn't turn on. On testing the machine, we find that the PSU has died. Invariably, these are units packaged in mini-towers, purchased from a "discount store". Unfortunately, the manufacturer of this computer didn't have a replacement power supply listed on their web site. On previous visits we have found replacements, however, the cost was about the same as a new case with included power supply.

The failed power supply that originally came with this computer was rated according to the label at 150 watts max. Before discount stores started selling computers the standard power supply was rated from 200 to 250 watts. Since then power usage of computers has increased considerably. Not only has the number of devices depending on the PSU increased but there has been a rapid increase in the amount of power consumed by the processor.

Slightly different angle

Although the colors of these pictures aren't quite right, the components look fairly decent in this black case. We have used this model case before, however, it was a very light almost white beige with black trim. It comes with a 400 watt PSU, which should be more than adequate considering this group of components managed to function with a 150 watt supply.
