Sound Dialog: Sounds Tab
The Sounds tab of the Control Panel Sound dialog is much the same as the Sounds tab of Windows XP Sounds and Audio Devices Properties. Still present is the drop down list which allows the selection of sound schemes you have created and saved or those you may have gotten from the Internet. The major differences are the labeling of the test button and the addition of the Play Windows Startup sound check box.
Changing event sound associations or creating a sound scheme is accomplished by selecting an event by single left clicking the event name in the "Program" list box. As with XP, events with a sound associated with them have a speaker icon next to them. Those events without the speaker icon do not have sound associations. With an event selected you can preview the sound if it has one by clicking the Test button. To change the sound you can select from the list that appears when clicking on the down arrow at the end of the "Sounds" combo list box or by clicking the browse button to select a custom sound from your hard drive. When you have finished assigning new sounds to system events click the "Save As" button in the upper portion of the screen. This opens a small screen in which you can provide a name for the new scheme. When changing schemes be sure to remember to click the "Apply" button toward the bottom of this screen just as you would when making other settings changes. Clicking the "OK" button closes the dialog.
